The Beginning....

The Beginning....
When William Least Heat-Moon toured the country many years ago, his steed, if you will, was a van that he named Ghost Dancing. His journey of America was 13,000 miles. His book is Blue Highways, A Journey Into America. My steed will be a Subaru WRX (traded for an XV Crosstrek). My travels will be, what in the past were called, the blue highways of Virginia. Years ago, maps showed secondary roads in blue. Yes, the ones less traveled.

Speaking of the A.R.E., a Sad Tale to Tell.....

Nonsense can and does kill. What am I talking about? The so-called alternative and complimentary medicine.

2006, a young fellow of 16 years,
Starchild Abraham Cherrix, whose family lived in Chincoteague, Virginia, was fighting for his life and battling cancer.

As happens to many, the chemotherapy treatments made him sick and weak. His family sought treatment for him in Mexico.

As I best remember, their first response was to go to the A.R.E. Based on what they learned there, they started using the Hoxsey treatment of liquid herbal supplements. And, things went downhill rapidly.

CPS got involved and ultimately, the court ordered conventional treatment; however, he did end-up with an MD in Mississippi, who mixed traditional medical treatment with the so-called alternative treatments.

And, how is this young fellow now? I do not know. The last I heard his mom and dad divorced, and his mom and siblings had moved to the Western part of the state and he's living in Floyd, Virginia.

Sadly, he still has symptoms.  And, who is treating him now? Last reported in 2011, a
chiropractor and an osteopathic doctor.

We often say, "What's the harm?" Whether it's Aunt Sue, who's pissing away her money on astrologers and psychics, or someone who is using homeopathic remedies and herbs. However, maybe the only thing Aunt Sue will lose is her money, but those who substitute sound and proven medical treatments for alternative treatments often end up dead. And, most of us would agree, that's harmful.

  1. Followed the above link, What's the Harm. Fascinating and unbelievable. Also, made a visit to the A.R.E. website. edgarcayce.org

From the looks of the web site there is an ass pile of money being made. I had no idea the this sort of thing existed at this level. Always thought this nonsense was simply a vehicle for low budget movies.

  2. Thanks for stopping by, Mark, Your comment appreciated. There is no end to the nonsense "out here." Yes, I know, I can't help myself....after all, this is supposed to be a travelogue of sorts. Oh, well...... Here are a few more links.

http://quackwatch.com/ Tons of stuff about all of the bogus treatments out there.

http://quackometer.net/ Dr. Andy Lewis, a UK doctor. He has his "Quack Meter." Type in someone's name or their Internet address, and the old Quack Meter will tell you whether or not they are a quack, And, it does seem to work.

http://www.randi.org/site/ Mr. Randi has a MILLION bucks waiting for any psychic, astrologer, energy healing, and so on who can prove their "stuff" works.

http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/ Orac is a surgeon specializing in breast cancer. He writes about a little of everything, but mainly bogus and pseudo medicine.

    Regards,

    George

PS. Actually, it'd be cool if I could mix my travel and photos with exposing all of the bogus and fraudulent, so-called complementary and alternative medicine and such "out there."
